Our Mission:
Project Create is committed to enriching and transforming
the lives of at-risk children in Washington, DC by providing them with professionally-led
arts experiences. We believe that arts experiences are essential to a child's
development. They empower children to reach their potential by fostering
critical thinking skills, creative expression, self-esteem, and social skills.
At-risk children, specifically those living in emergency, transitional,
and long-term affordable family housing, have little or no access to the
arts. Project Create brings the arts to these children by working in partnership
with social service organizations that offer family housing.

Our History :
Project Create was established in 1994 when Thaddeus
Stevens Elementary School asked Western Presbyterian Church to offer arts
programming to the children in their after-school program. In 2001, Project
Create teamed up with Church of the Pilgrims to offer after-school art classes
to the students at Francis Junior High School. In 2002, we began working
with So Other Might Eat, offering art classes before tutoring on Wednesday
nights.
This partnership was so successful that in 2004, we evaluated our mission
and programs and moved in a new direction- providing at-risk youth with
access to the arts through partnerships with established community organizations.
Project Create has grown from a church/school partnership to independent
non-profit that partners with social service organizations that provide
family housing and offer educational programs for children. Although our
direction and partners have changed, our goal has remained constant—to provide
children with access to the arts in an environment that respects and nurtures
their development as individuals
